Lilyanna recently graduated from Bellevue College with an associate’s degree in criminal justice and is transferring to Seattle University to continue her education. She strives to make a difference for others and is always looking to learn and expand while staying true to herself.

What made you decide to join HSD as an intern this summer?

I decided to join HSD this summer as an intern to learn more about the department and how things function to make decisions for the community.

What are some of the things you’ve learned at HSD that you plan to carry with you as you continue in your professional journey?

Some things I’ve learned: Express yourself and give input, because someone could value it and help you progress in your journey. Don’t be afraid to ask questions because everyone is both helpful and wants to see you succeed.

What are your goals for the future? Has your experience with HSD shifted your thinking at all?

My goals for the future are to pursue my bachelor’s degree in criminal justice while still educating myself on where I would like to be. My experience at HSD has shifted my thinking a bit, by learning the inner workings of the department and seeing how interconnected it can be with other departments.

What advice would you give to future HSD interns?

My advice to future HSD interns would be to take your time getting to know your surroundings and other people in the department because networking is important. I also recommend not being too hard on yourself if you’re overwhelmed or feel unprepared. You’ll eventually find your footing, and it’ll all be a better experience in the end.
