September is Healthy Aging Month, an opportunity to raise awareness about the unique needs of older adults and their caregivers. Across the nation, the number of people aged 65 and older has grown nearly five times faster than the general population in recent years, and 1 in 6 people in the U.S. are now 65+.
The Aging and Disability Services (ADS) division within Seattle Human Services is designated by state and federal governments as the Area Agency on Aging (AAA) for Seattle and King County. ADS funds and delivers a variety of long-term services and supports for older adults, family caregivers, and people with disabilities.
Older adults are more likely to be and feel healthy when they feel physically and mentally well, when they can afford to meet their basic needs, and when they feel connected to others in their community.
Here are some of the ways we work to achieve these goals:
Community Living Connections
Community Living Connections (CLC) is a one-stop resource hotline for older adults, adults with disabilities, caregivers and family members. CLC advocates provide confidential assistance in accessing community resources and service options, including state and federal benefits, health and wellness activities, transportation, home repair and more.
In 2024, more than 20,000 individuals received assistance through Community Living Connections. To reach a CLC advocate, call 1-844-348-5464.
Maintaining health and well-being
For many people, healthy aging means maintaining their physical capabilities and cognitive function. Health Promotion empowers people to self-manage and improve their health through health education, disease prevention and chronic health management activities and classes.
Several organizations across King County offer evidence-based Health Promotion programs to meet a variety of needs, including the management of chronic illness, treatment for depression, and training for caregivers. Community Living Connections can make referrals to these activities; call 1-844-348-5464 to be connected.
The Sound Generations geriatric regional assessment team (GRAT) is a team of behavioral health professionals who reach out to older adults to assess their needs and offer support. People aged 55 and older residing in King County and experiencing cognitive, mental health, and/or substance use issues can receive services in their homes.
Anti-Ageism training
Did you know that ageism harms our health, and can even reduce lifespans? That’s why we created a training tool to address this pervasive issue. Designed for people of all ages, this 45 minute online training helps people identify ageism in our personal and professional lives, and provides tips for combatting it.
One of the biggest culprits is our own internalized ageism—we invite you to take the training and see what you learn!
Age-friendly events
Maintaining a sense of belonging is an important part of healthy aging. Age Friendly Seattle is a citywide initiative advocating for age-friendly communities and hosting community events throughout the year. Held at various locations across Seattle, the Civic Coffee event series connects older adults with community leaders to discuss important issues, access resources, and share feedback.
This month, Age Friendly Seattle will host a special community event to recognize Falls Prevention Week. On Friday, Sept. 26, come to Bell Street Park in Belltown for fall prevention tips, seated yoga, a health and wellness fair, arts and crafts, and an opportunity to visit with friends and neighbors. This free event takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Gold Cards and Discount Directory
Getting out and staying connected to community is a vital part of healthy aging. Along with the community events listed above, we encourage all Seattle residents aged 60 and older to apply for a Gold Card.
With a Gold Card, older adults can receive discounts at dozens of businesses and organizations across the Seattle area, including the Seattle Art Museum, Woodland Park Zoo, Town Hall Seattle, and more. Visit the newly redesigned online Discount Directory and map to search for a business or organization, or browse by location or category.
