Enroll NOW in kindergarten 2012-13

Enroll now in Seattle Public Schools kindergarten for 2012-13.  The City of Seattle is partnering with Seattle Public Schools to host early kindergarten enrollment nights at seven elementary schools in Seattle this November, December and January. Families who attend will have a chance to meet school principals and hear from kindergarten teachers and family support workers about  kindergarten transition and what to expect in kindergarten.  For more information, please see this news release.

School attendance campaign launches Oct. 3rd

The Seattle Mayor’s Office, in partnership with Seattle Public Schools, the Alliance for Education and Get Schooled, will soon launch an exciting citywide campaign to encourage students to get to school. ”Be Here. Get There.” is a research-driven, incentive-based campaign designed to increase community focus and awareness on the important link between school attendance and a student’s future success.  Throughout the year schools, classrooms, individual teachers and students will be awarded prizes for the most improved attendance. “Be Here. Get There” rewards positive behavior and educates students, families and the community about the shared responsibility to get students to school every day.

Children to vie for book reading record on Oct. 6

Are you interested in helping to break the world record for one book read to the greatest number of children on one day, on October 6, 2011? Read for the Record, a partnership between Jumpstart for Young Children, the Pearson Foundation, and hundreds of nonprofit organizations and schools across the country, encourages record-breakers to spread the word that reading with a child before he or she enters kindergarten can improve his or her likelihood of graduating from high school by as much as 30 percent. RFP for housing support

King County Department of Community and Human Services, Seattle Office of Housing, Seattle Housing Authority, United Way of King County, and Washington Families Fund have announced a Request for Proposals process as part of the Fall 2011 King County Combined Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA). Approximately $14.2 million for operating support, rental assistance, and supportive services, and up to 70 Housing Choice Vouchers are available to be linked to non-time limited housing for people experiencing homelessness in King County.

Support for family caregivers

A nearly $1 million boost in state funding will help hundreds of family caregivers who take care of loved ones in their own homes.Family caregiving plays a vital role in helping some of the most vulnerable members of our community remain in their homes and stay independent, but caregiving also takes a heavy toll on the caregivers including stress, depression and increased chances of developing chronic illnesses.

 The Family Caregiver Support Program, run by the Seattle Human Services Department’s Aging and Disability Services (ADS), received an increase of $987,000 for one year from July 2011. The added funding brings the total program budget to $2.5 million and will allow the program to serve approximately 430 county residents who are taking care of family members.

Mayor promotes city’s free preschool programs

Joined by educators and children of Seattle’s La Escuelita Bilingual School, Mayor Mike McGinn announced today (Aug. 31) openings in the City of Seattle’s free and reduced-fee preschool programs. The Seattle Human Services Department is now enrolling 4-year-olds from low- to moderate-income families in free or low-cost, high-quality preschool programs. Step Ahead and the Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program (ECEAP) still have free or reduced-cost spaces available for more than 250 children at 21 sites in southeast and southwest Seattle this school year. Step Ahead is funded by the Seattle Families and Education Levy, and ECEAP is funded by the state of Washington.
