Deputy Mayor Darryl Smith and Councilmember Nick Licata joined community members on June 26 at the Jefferson Community Center to kick off the Seattle Human Services Department’s Summer Food Service Program.

“We want young people in Seattle to have a fun, safe and healthy summer, and it all starts with good nutrition,” said Deputy Mayor Smith. “Many people know about the free school lunch program but not about this great free meals program for kids and teens during the summer months.”

Thousands of Seattle children ages 1 through 18 will enjoy free, nutritious breakfasts, lunches and snacks this summer through the Summer Food Service Program, which runs from Wednesday, June 27 through Friday August 24, 2012 at approximately 100 sites across the city.

The Summer Food Service Program, formerly known as Summer Sack Lunch, is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and was established in 1968. The City of Seattle has operated this program in Seattle since the early 1970s.

After more than 10 years as a social services counselor, Diane found herself in an almost unimaginable role reversal. With her 3-year-old son and teenage daughter, Diane moved to a family emergency shelter – one of the same shelters to which she referred her clients. How is the recession affecting the lives of economically vulnerable families raising young children in King County? To find out, Communities Count (a partnerhsip of City, County and other community partners) interviewed a diverse group of low- to middle-income parents.1 In this post, Communities Count explores the economic borderland that few middle-class parents ever imagine they will inhabit. From the perspective of this unfamiliar world, the essential role of social service benefits is examined in helping families work their way to self-sufficiency.
